Paint Products And How They Are Used

by Cathy Vasquez

If you are new to the world of paint products, you may have wondered what each paint product is used for and why you would ever need to use them. There are a number of paint products and materials out there, and you may feel lost when browsing for an upcoming project. See below for paint products and how they should be used in a home.

Primer

Primer is used when trying to paint over dark colored paint (to a lighter color) or when painting bare drywall. The primer helps prevent paint from soaking into the bare drywall (which means less paint coats) and gives your wall a smooth surface.

Paint

There are a number of different paints on the market from different finishes/sheens to tinted products to paints with primer in one. When choosing paint for your walls, be sure to choose a paint that isn't the cheapest available. You want a durable paint that coats well, which means less time painting your walls. When looking for your paint sheen, satin, eggshell, or semi-gloss are best. High-gloss or semi-gloss work well for trim work. Eggshell or satin work best for ceilings. The glossier the sheen, the more you will notice imperfections, which is why glossy sheens are not good for your walls.

Paint is sold for interior or exterior walls and can be water-based or oil-based. Oil based paints are easy to clean and work well with exterior paint projects. Water-based paints such as latex work well with interior paint projects.

Paintbrushes

You can find paintbrushes in all sizes from mini brushes to larger 4 inch brushes. When cutting in the paint on your walls or ceiling, it may be easier to paint with an angled paintbrush. The size depends on how much you want to paint with the paintbrush in a single stroke. Larger paintbrushes may be a little heavier while smaller brushes may not give you enough of an outline. A 2 1/2 inch angled paintbrush is a good choice when cutting in paint.

Rollers

Rollers also come in different sizes. The thicker the nap, the more paint you can get on the roller. Thicker naps are great to use when painting over a textured surface while thinner naps are better for painting walls. You can choose from foam, lambswool, woven, or textured to create a textured wall. Rollers are great to use when trying to cover a large surface such as walls or ceilings. You can also use small mini rollers to cover smaller surfaces such as trim.

Tape

Painter's tape should be used, especially if you don't have a steady hand. The paint allows you to get a straight definite line without the paint bleeding through the tape and getting onto the wall or other surface that you didn't want painted. Look for painter's tape specifically made to prevent paint from bleeding through. Use a putty knife or scraper to help press the tape onto the wall so it adheres properly without any gaps.

Whether you're a new homeowner or just new to painting, look for the right type of paint products for your next project. For more information, contact local professionals like Koontz Hardware.

About Me

Creating Beautiful Items For Your Home

When I started staying at home full time, I realized that there were a few things that I wanted but that I couldn't afford. I started thinking about how to make the most of my free time to create a more beautiful home, and I realized that crafting would solve both problems. I started paying more attention to the ways that I could design different items, and almost overnight my home became a more welcoming, warm place. I wanted to create a website that would allow me to share my love of crafting with other people. Check out these great ideas.
